Mea Maxima Culpa

As someone who has constantly checked the authenticity of e-mails, I fell victim to my own error by posting on Facebook a phrase that was incorrectly attributed.

The quote was “The duty of a Patriot is defend the country from its government.” I accepted that attribution to be from Thomas Paine, because it was posted by Heritage Foundation — usually a very, very valid site.

“The quote attributed to Thomas Paine in this photo from FB does NOT appear in general quote listings of the alleged author, and the work is not shown in the photo. The phrase does NOT appear on the Online Library of Liberty, while many other quotes from Thomas Paine do. “A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government” IS a quote of from Edward Abbey in “A Voice Crying in the Wilderness “, 1990.”

One can only hope that the Heritage Foundation is equally ashamed as am i.
