The WaPo is editorializing that “Congress Should Stop the Trump Administration From Fouling The Census”

WaPo is joking, right? The Constitution says the Census should “enumerate” the population. Enumerate simply means count.

I have filled out a bunch of Census forms. Number of bathrooms?

Air/conditioning, yes or no? White, Black, Hispanic…?

“Enumerate” went out the window a long, long time ago. Pages ago.

Enumerate can be completed on a postcard, “How many people live at this address?”

Or if you prefer, “How many citizens live at this address?”

That’s it, folks! And that’s all it should be!

Deadly, and Largely Unnecessary

The number of flu deaths has risen to 319 just in San Diego County, with 11 new deaths last week.

I spent five days in the hospital myself, when the Urgent Care could get no blood pressure.

This was a self inflicted wound on my part, because I thought that a flu shot with as little as 16% efficiency would not be worth the effort! Wrong again, Hemphill. I’ll be standing at the front of the line next year because the flu knocked me for a loop.

Because I am 84, and my blood pressure was unmeasurable, I was admitted to Sharp Hospital for five days. I was released a few days early because I have so much support at home, but I am now fully recovered. Well, nearly.

Fortunately, with the help of TheraFlu, the matter resolved early and my household was protected. The flu was brought into my home by my General Factorum, who is from Guatemala, and although a Green Card holder of more than a decade, still holds to some backward medical concepts.

We will all be better prepared next year. I suggest you be ready also. Flu can be deadly.

Biggest NRA Booster

Retired US Supreme Court, and I must emphasize “RETIRED,” Justice John Paul Stevens thinks the time has come to repeal the Second Amendment.

Stupid! Repealing a Constitutional Amendment is a tremendous political exercise needing near unanimous national support. First, a 2/3 vote in the House and Senate, or a Constitutional Convention proposed by two thirds of the state.

As though that was not enough…

Then you are still left with 300 million guns, and 2 billion rounds of ammunition…

You have to admit, Justice Stevens has become the NRA Poster Boy for membership and fund raising.

Apocalypse Now (Well, not so much…)

John Bolton is a great choice for National Security Advisor, if for no other reason than he has driven the liberals absolutely bonkers!

To say that the appointment of Bolton is apocalyptic to many is almost an understatement. Even the cerebral George Will is concerned:

“Because John Bolton is five things President Trump is not — intelligent, educated, principled, articulate and experienced — and because of Bolton’s West Wing proximity to a president responsive to the most recent thought he has heard emanating from cable television or an employee, Bolton will soon be the second-most dangerous American.”

When it comes to keeping the world on its toes, no one can deny the world will pay attention to John Bolton.

Whores At Sea

It was not unusual for a whore (or six) to sail in Nelson’s Navy, the “Wall of Wood” that protected England, in fact it happens/happens in most Navies. In a little known event, fortunately, it happened in my Division on a U.S. Submarine.

My wife and we’re enjoying a wonderful leave period in Hong Kong, a present from my Skipper for abjuring my Stateside leave period for an immediate underway to WestPac. When the time came for the USS Diodon (SS 349) to set sail for Yokosuka, Japan, the Skipper saw me at the China Fleet Club and asked if I would like to extend my visit with my wife while the Submarine sailed to Yokosuka.

Of course I would!

My wife and I eventually flew to Tokyo, I settled my wife in, and reported to my Submarine…only to be greeted by an irate Skipper who stuttered something incomprehensible, until I finally deciphered “an International incident.”

Calming, slightly, he continued: “Do you understand that Japan, our ally, is an insular nation, with a decidedly homogeneous population?”

Since he, a big liberal, and I had debated for months on end and he had banned me, briefly, from debating politics in the Wardroom, he and I both understood that his question was rhetorical.

“O.K Skipper, I still don’t know the subject.”

“Hemphill, YOUR Engineering Department brought two whores from Hong Kong into Japan! They used the After Torpedo Compartment. This is a Diplomatic disaster!”

Needing to get away before I burst out laughing, I said, “Right Skipper, let me go find out what happened.”

And I ran aft, trying to stay, actually, get under control, and no, I don’t know how the stripped-pants brigade handled it at the State Department. I do know I had no intention of doing a whole lot of work to discover the culprits.

I never did find out!

Our Standing Tariff

I would be opposed to the announced steel and aluminum tariffs, if that’s what they are but it is obviously an opening move in an effort to reduce tariffs worldwide.

Of course we would be on stronger ground if we would reduce our tariffs on sugar. We have had tariffs on foreign sugar since 1789, and right now the tariffs amounts to 6 cents a pound. That means Americans paid more than $1.4 billion each year more than if sugar was not protected by tariffs, and sugar users like chocolate manufacturers like Hershey could pay world market prices.

Our sugar growers have been protected for centuries.

If, and only if the president is trying to get China’s tariff on automobiles down from 25% on our cars by putting a 10% on their steel and thereby get Chinas’ attention.

Many nations have tariffs, and all should have none.

We could start with sugar.

The Teacher Was Right!

Students at Parkland in Florida are accusing a teacher of cowardice in shutting and locking the door of their classroom, leaving them defenseless in the hallway.

Submariners inherently understand the problem. Because Submarines don’t sink by separate compartments, when submerged flooding occurs, it is policy to slam shut the watertight doors, consigning the sailors on the wrong side to the high potential of drowning until the submarine can make an emergency surface and possibly thereafter.

Without knowing the Parkland situation in specifics, the teacher made the right decision in theory. There may be some situation that counters the theory of instant reaction to threat, but for right now, I go with the teacher’s decision.

Only Law Abiding Obey Laws

I have no objective to limiting both guns and the voting age to 21, I just think it should be 25.

And, don’t even try to bring up fighting for your country at a younger age…I joined at 17 and stayed for 26. There is no draft, so the fighters are all volunteers (as it should be) and any killing they may do will be overseas where US laws don’t apply.

Recent readings of the news convinces me that the voting age should be raised. Setting a higher age for guns is basically immaterial because if an 18 year old wants a gun they will get a gun, Chicago proves that.

There are 300 million guns among the population. If a person is willing to kill 20 or 30 people, he won’t care about a law saying he is too young to buy a gun!
