The Fresno State University professor, Randa Jarrar, whose big mouth has been so disrespectful to the memory of Barbara Bush, has made the national news.
Fortunately, she is protected by the First Amendment, and Academic Freedom, since she is a government employee and working for a government entity.
We must give her the protection of the First Amendment if we, in turn will claim the First Amendment for our Conservative speakers on campus. She does not, however, have the right to a classroom full of students. Assign her to the depths of the library to research and publish words like “civility,” “tolerances,” “inclusiveness,” etc.
Universities must be very careful. If they try to fire her they must have an air tight case because a liberal court will give her the benefit of the doubt. I am certain the university can find something other than her comments, but a Court may infer, logically, that it was her comments that were the proximate cause.
So, banishment to the depths of the library seems the better solution. Of course she will have a sympathetic media, but she has a right to speak, she simply does not have a right to a classroom full of students.
