Border Rush

On New Year’s Eve, about 150 illegal aliens tried a Banzai Rush to the Wall here in San Diego. About two dozen illegals came over or under the wall, and were quickly apprehended by Border Patrol but not until the illegals attacked the Border Patrol with rocks and received tear gas in return.

All in all a failed attempt, but it does demonstrate a level of frustration in the Tijuana camp. There are rumors of a new Caravan forming in Honduras and this one is huge, a reported 15,000.

Those currently in the Tijuana camp probably want to get a leg up on the throng coming, if indeed they are coming, or coming all the way. It is possible the new Caravan will only get to southern Mexico where Mexico has a labor shortage. Caravan members now know that getting into the US is not the slam dunk they were told by the organizing agencies.

I can’t imagine the chaos that would be taking place in San Diego if we didn’t have our wall. Already the City Government is scrambling to provide warm shelter for both the fourth largest homeless population in America plus the illegals released after they have succeeded in their initial screening.

Nights are cold in deserts and we are a semi-arid desert. Being homeless on our streets is no piece of cake, and we have a large veteran homeless population that needs our aid before illegals.

A New Republican Power Base

Mitt Romney certainly fired a shot across Trump’s bow today.

Much is being made of Romney’s column in the Washington Post, probably more and less than it deserves. More because it marks a challenger for the Republican Primaries although officially unannounced, and less because it commented negatively on only the president’s character.

The column gives credit to Trump’s policies, which do indeed mirror Republican Party standards, but Romney remarks negatively on Trump’s character. That is not a cheap shot because few of Trump’s supporters believe Trump to be a paragon of virtue or a teller of truth.

Trump’s supporters will tell you that Trump succeeded in pushing policies that previous Republicans simply talked about. Trump actually pushed China on trade, Trump actually got a tax break through, Trump actually got a conservative Supreme Court, Trump actually faces illegal immigration down, Trump…

And Trump was elected president, not Bishop, so Trump should be valued as a politician not as a spiritual leader. We have had that spiritual leader in President Carter, Trump supporters will tell you, and a lot of good that did the US.

The Romney column plows no new ground. He tells us what we already know…that Trump is crude, rude and lewd, that Trump has embraced our historical enemies and enraged our friends.

Trump doesn’t view Russia, or North Korea with the anger I believe they deserve, he seeks only Cabinet members who are toad-eaters, and his crudeness has put off the effete of Europe as confirmation to them that Americans can’t divine the use of a salad fork.

The Senate has a new power base. It remains to be seen if anyone rallies to Romney’s side.

Getting Scared

O.K. I admit. I have less confidence today in our government than I did yesterday.

Yesterday, we had Marine General Jim Mattis and Army General John Kelly, and today we have neither. I don’t scare easily, but I am scared.

You can tell me that there is nothing to worry about, but at best major players on the international scene who have almost a century between them of dedication to the nation’s future, are not there to act as a break on Trump’s most outrageous inclinations. And EVERY person who has left the White House has assured us that Trump has outrageous inclinations.

V.P. Pence has shown no ability, nor willingness to restrain Trump in any manner, and so the ship of state is unmoored. It could turn out alright, but the Kurds have been given cover in Syria only because of the intervention of Senator Graham, and that is a thin reed indeed to try to moor a ship as large as this nation.

One of the things I initially wrote in support of was the strength of Trump’s Cabinet. That Cabinet is now a shoebox as we have lost all the First Stringers and have a bunch of “Acting” members that no one ever heard of.
